Coffee Lounge Painting

The Coffee Lounge has been painted!
On budget, and ahead of programme.

No real mishaps, a few bits of paint in wrong places, but generally not bad.

Two days hard work. 9-5 on Thursday and 9 - 1 on Friday.

It was like one of those DIY SOS 24 hour make overs......

Many hands make light work, so does electricity!

Isaac just got on with it and did his bit everywhere.

Artistic differences with regard to colours needed to be discussed and agreed.

White ceiling, natural hessian to the walls and cookie dough to the noticeboard and pelmet.

Some thought it was better just to sit out the arguments.

The finished room

Almost there!

Windows cleaned and carpet wet vaxed.
Ready for the tables and chairs.

Notice board

Thanks to all the Company Section Boys for their time and effort over the last two days.

Also big thanks to Janice H and Lisa C for also mucking in and helping out.

Company Section - Discovery Badgework for Skills

Skills - Home Improvement - Painting Project.

The Company Section are painting the Coffee Lounge at the Church Halls on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th of December.

Santa was good to us, he gave us the paint that we require, he left it with me last night.
Thanks Untouchable Santa (You know who you are!)

I have invested some of our money in buying some good paint rollers, good paint brushes, paint kettles, a skittle, a pole, dust sheets and some coveralls. (builders/painters terms).
So bring anything you think might be useful, but most importantly I am looking for you to do the painting.

I am putting together a very tight schedule of works starting at 9 am on Thursday and Friday we aim to be finished by 5 pm on both days if not sooner.

Anchor Section - Fire Station Visit - Tuesday 11th October

The Guys all seemed to enjoy their visit to the Fire Station tonight, including the Company Section Boys that were there as well.

I heard that they found the siren on one of the pumps and the blue lights.

Saturday's Hike

4 hours out in the Scottish Borders hills, walk out have lunch, walk back, with a bit of rain and some midgies thrown in for good measure.

Nobody lost, all a wee bit wet, some more than others.
By the way there was a bridge they could have used. The Officers paddled through on the way up but used the bridge on the way back.

Company Section - Grade 2 Expedition with Grade 1 added on.

We have organised a grade 2 expedition/hike/walk on Saturday 27th August. Last years first years in the Company Section can also come alo9ng if they are free to do so.

We will leave from the Church at 9 am, and should be back at around 6 pm depending upon traffic, amount of talking, and speed of walking.

The Guys will obviously need good sturdy footwear, sensible socks trousers, tee shirt perhaps a jumper or fleece.
I'm not saying walking boots, because they are costly and not everybody has them.
A ruck sack, with some wet weather clothing, and something to eat , packed lunch, juice, crisps, fruit, chocolate, whatever they want or eat, but only enough for 7 or 8 hours.

We are going down to Tweedsmuir (OS Sht 72 096244) a walk around Quarter hill and Muckle Knowe which is in woodland overlooking the Talla Reservoir.

Email me to let me know if you want to go.

Anchor Section trip - Sunday 22nd May

Be round at Woodside Primary for 9.30/9.45 am the bus is leaving at 10 am.
Please remember to bring along the trip consent forms.

You should be up at Blair Drummond and in the park for 11.30, they usually do the drive through safari bit first before stopping at the main car/bus park and picnic area to eat your packed lunch.

There are loads of things to see and do up there.

Just for a laugh , look at Calum and Robbie in 2006 -  Junior trip to Blair Drummond.

The Bus will be leaving around 3.30 and you should be back at Woodside Primary between 4.45 & 5 pm.

Hope the weather stays dry for the Anchor Section, it does not matter for the Juniors, they are getting wet anyway!

Junior Section trip - Sunday 22nd May

This Sunday 9.45 at the Church car park we leave at 10 am.
Please remember to bring aslong your completed trip consent form.

We are going to Brancumhall Golf Development Centre in East Kilbride to play 9 holes on the mini golf course up there.
It will be a "Texas Scrabble" - 3 teams of 4 players. Everybody in the team hits a shot off the tee. The team pick the best drive and they all then take the next shot from there, and so on until you hole out the ball in as few shots as possible for the team.
It usually produces some really good scores, so we are looking for the winning team to be around 30 or lower.

Then we will go round to James Hamilton park where we will eat our packed lunch before doing a 2 hour raft building activity.
Remember to to bring old trainers or aqua shoes, swimming trunks, a towel, plus a £1 coin for the lockers.
Hopefully back down at the Church for 4 pm.

We have found them. And the "Old" photo

(Click on the picture to open it in a different window or to save it )

We now been in contact with the lost team of 1980. They are well and living across the length and breadth of the UK and abroad.
They are all willing to take on the 2011 team, although some are looking for concessions to be made.
I will make a booking for a hall very soon and will let everybody know the time and venue.

This is going to be a fundraiser for two charities -The exact details of which I have not fully worked out yet. Probably - Marie Curie and Macmillan, but this all needs to be confirmed.
We will need prizes and medals, raffle gifts, general fundraisers, sponsorship, etc?
Maybe even a Challenge Cup for the winners. Any thoughts/offers?

The Missing Webby - email sent

Hopefully we have just located the missing member of the Volleyball Team.

I was given an email address of the 8th member of the team tonight at Company Section.
Email sent, now awaiting a reply?

The new Boys team went into serious traing mode tonight, they played for over an hour, dumped the pink plastic practice ball and tried the real mitre volleyball. Sorry about the red wrists, it's part of the game!

So the Old Boys have their team sorted at least eight of them.
I now need to find our best 8 for a team for the new Boys.

JS Figure Marching and CS Squad Drill Results

We were 3rd in the Junior Section Figure Marching Competition. We scored 62 points.
The winners were on 64 and 2nd place scored 63 so it was very close.

We aso have the result in from Friday nights Company Section Squad Drill Competition.
We finished 4th.
1st Bothwell won, then 2nd Hamilton followed by 2nd Blantyre and then us in 4th, and in last place 13th Hamilton.

I also got a copy of the Junior Section Bible Competition results on Sunday at the Quarterdeck Parade.
Very interesting reading. You will all find out who won that at the Display.

"Do you realise we are all over 45? Are you having a laugh?

That is the comment in the last email I have just received from one of the "honed athletes" from the 1980 volleyball team.

I have managed to track down 7 out of the original 8 Boy team.
As Elrick pointed out, they are all over 45, with some of them nearing 50.

Out of the 7 I have contacted. 6 of them are up for the game against the new Boys.
One of them is using an excuse about being in America for not playing.......
Our Minister is from America and he can't play volleyball either, it must be something to do with the Atlantic.

So I will have to pull in my reserves from the running up team in 1981.Grazy and Sprinter are getting a call up!
I will also give Cheating Smeaton, Kenny McVicar and Graeme Reilly a call. Hammy Smillie might still have that purple track suit?
I know that Harry Webster still has a sweatshirt from 1980 with the winning logo. Dougie has one of them as well with his name on it, but he says it WILL not fit him anymore.

So I am off now to try to sort out a venue and a time.
A secondary school games hall with a volleyball court that is available in late August/Early September.

That gives you the best part of 5 months to get training.

The Boys need to meet Douglas Hutton at 6.30 pm at the TACT Hall which is off Blantyre Farm Road on the corner of Carlowrie Avenue and Hillview Drive
They are due there at 6.30 pm, they will be inspected at 6.45 and on the floor to do their drill routine. They should be finished for 7 pm.
If they could then be brought back across to the Church we will start them in Com0pnay Section when they arrive upstairs in the Session house, finish at the usual time at our Church.

Click on the map to enlarge and see it clearly.

5, maybe 6 or 7 out of the 8 have been found!

We are slowly tracking them down.
Now only got 3 people still to talk to but hopefully we have managed to get the message out to 2 of these over the weekend.
So hopefully by the middle of the week, we are still only looking for one of the 1980 team members.
Big Webby, (Ian Webb) he used to stay in Elliot Crescent, but that was years ago.
Dougie is going to get a copy of the picture and we can scan it onto the blogsite.
That will be a laugh to see all that long 1980's hair do's.
Keep an eye out for webby get him to give me a phone.

Where is RALPH?

We have leads on 7 of the 8 members of the winning VB team. Letters in the posts or being passed on via old addresses, emails etc. being sent and answered, telephone calls to random numbers, and of course checking out the Golf Club.

But we have no idea where Ralph is?

His real name is of course Alistair Wilson, but due to some strange reason, which has never really been properly explained to me, he was always called Ralph.

Do you know where he is, his older Brother Kenneth (Kenny) I think still stays in Hamilton as does his sister. Do you know them, do you know Alistair, Can you put me in contact with him.

RALPH we are looking for YOU!

Volleyball

The Company Section have been playing volleyball this session, for the first time in a good number of years. We have some promising talent down here on a Friday night.

The thing is Dougie says that they will never be as good as they "old Boys" when he was in the VB team. They won the National Volleyball competition in 1980 or was it 1981. We can't agree, but we will find out.

The recent Thanksgiving service for Norman Batty, made me think about the enjoyment and sense of team achievement we used to have when we regularly played volleyball on a Friday night , at camp and had teams in the National Competitions. I saw so many people who were Boys or Officers in the Company in the 1970's and 80's.
I talked to Douglas about this two weeks ago and we thought it might be a good idea to have a volleyball challenge/fundraiser.
So we thought , why not try to get the winning national VB team for the 1980's back to play a Boys and Officer select team at a match to be organised in August/September this year, as a sort of 30th Anniversary reunion along with a Company 85th Celebration.

If anybody is related to/or knows of the whereabouts of any of the 1980's team players, let them know about this and get them to contact me.

Company Section Masterteam - WINNERS

Each year the Battalion hold a Company Section competition called Masterteam.

It is a quiz, based on BB Knolwedge, general knowledge, sports, observation and the current Bible Passage for this year Bible Competition.

The team is made up of a 3 Company Section Boys, from the 3 age ranges - a junior, an intermediate, and a senior.

This year we could manage to get a team together, one from each age range and we actually got 3 volunteers.

Alex, Robbie and Isaac went out on Monday night to represent the Company and gubbed the rest of the Battalion. They were in the lead from round 1, and secured victory by 10 points.

Well done guys, lets see the cup on Friday.
Now we need to continue the winning streak.
Next the Bible Competition, and then the Company Squad Drill.
