Anchor Section McDonalds Tea

Hi Folks,
I hope you all had a really good Christmas and since I'm sending this on Hogmanay, I wish you all a happy and peaceful 2010.

As we previously said on our calendar, our first Tuesday in 2010 (5th Jan), is our outing to McDonalds, Palace Grounds, for Tea.

The Boys should meet us inside McDonalds between 5.45 and 6pm. They should wear their Anchor Polo shirt and Sweat shirt, but can wear their jeans on the bottom half, as usual.

When they arrive I will take their order – NO money required, as this is their Christmas/ New Year treat.
You should plan to pick your Son up again from McDonalds at 7.15pm, as normal.

It would be helpful if you could let me know by e-mail or text, whether or not your son will be going.
Hope to see you all there.

Linda.
PS. Anchor Section resumes, normal time and place on Tuesday 12th.

Junior & Company Section 10-pin Bowling

I hope that you have all had a good Christmas & Santa brought you everything that you asked for .

As usual we are going 10-pin bowling. I have booked Cosmic Bowling at M&D's in Strathclyde Park for 2 pm on Wednesday 30th December.

We are booked to play 2 games of bowling, so that should take approx. 2 hours.
So as we can start at 2 pm, we would like the Boys down for 1.45, so as I can split them up into age groups teams for their lanes.

Also it would help us greatly if we knew who is or is not coming.
So I would ask that you email me back to let me know one way or the other.

Obviously no uniform for this outing, and they can bring some spending money for food etc.

Thanks
Mark

Smarties

I have given each Boy a full tube of Smarties tonight; this is to help with the fund raising. Our usual simple rules apply, eat the Smarties keep the tube and full it with 20 pence pieces.

When it is full bring it back on a Friday night, sometime after Christmas, probably during February.

This all helps towards the company funds and some of the money is also used as “profit share” towards the cost of the Annual trips.

The Anchor Section will get their Smarties on Tuesday 24th November

Junior & Company Sections – Friday 27th November 2009

As you know next Saturday is the Cadzow Parish Christmas Fayre, so we have given up our use of the halls on Friday night in order to let the halls be set up for the Christmas Fayre.

We are still on; we have been invited to a “St Andrew’s” themed night at the 1st Bothwell Company.

The Junior Section are asked to be across at the Bothwell Parish Church Halls at the slightly later time of 6.40 pm, this is in order to allow their Anchor Section to finish and be clear of the car park. The Boys can be picked up at 8 pm.

The Company Section should be across for the normal time of 7.45 pm and be picked up at 10 pm.

Uniform to be worn as usual. The Boys should bring their normal collection and tuck shop money.

Church Parade & Coming Events

3rd Sunday Church Parade – this Sunday 15th Nov 2009.
Full Uniform, including school trousers and school shoes.
Please remember to bring your collection.
Normal time arrangements: meet in the hall between 10.20 and 10.30am and pick-up from the hall, at approx. 11.45, after the Service.

CHURCH CHRISTMAS FAYRE
Our Christmas Fayre is on Saturday 28th November, at 1.30pm. Once again we are organising the Tombola and therefore we would ask for any donations for this stall, such as bottles, boxes of sweets, toiletries, pens/pencils and colouring books, small toys etc., simply anything you would like to donate.
These donations can be handed in to Boys' Brigade on the next two Tuesdays (17th and 24th) or the next two Fridays (13th or 20th), or on the morning of the 28th.
Please remember, if everyone donates at least 1 or 2 items, then with a company of 55 Boys, we will manage to have a successful Tombola.

Annual Fees
The constitution of the Boys’ Brigade lays out a requirement that each member should pay an annual Membership Fee and that each Company should pay an annual Registration/Insurance Fee.
Therefore, the Capitation Fee this session for the 5th Hamilton Company will be:
Anchor Boys - £12.00 Junior and Company Section Boys - £13.50 All Officers - £13.50
Weekly collection money for all Boys and officers will remain at 50p per week.
I would appreciate if you could make payment of the Capitation Fee as soon as possible in order that we can finalise and make payment to Brigade Headquarters within the proper time restrains imposed.

ANCHOR SECTION

Firstly, can I thank all the boys who attended the Anchor Section games night at Holy Cross, it was a really good night and we were all impressed with the way you all behaved. I'm happy to say that we are always confident when we take our boys anywhere and this was no exception.

COFFEE MORNING - just a wee reminder that the coffee morning is on Saturday 31st October and we are selling tickets at Anchors, this Tuesday and next.

If you are into baking, we would also appreciate any donations of home baking, which can be handed in to BB on Friday 30th, between 6.30 and 10pm.

See you all on Tuesday.

Our Annual Coffee Morning will be held on:

Saturday 31st October 2009
between 10 and 12 noon in the Church halls.

Tickets cost £1.50 for adults and £1 for children.

We are of course looking for people to help us with home baking for the eats table and also for the home baking stall. Any and all donations of home baking will be gratefully received. For ease bring them down on the Friday 30th to Junior or Company Section.

There will be the usual Christmas Hamper stall.

This year we are hoping to make a donation to the neo natal unit at Wishaw General, and unit that quite a few of you will have experience of and I'm sure truly appreciate the work done by them.

Update on Linda's abseil

Thanks to everybody who sponsored Linda to jump off a lighthouse (with a rope attached).

She did it 3 weeks ago now, it was a lovely bright and sunny day but very, very windy day in Dunbar.

She has managed to raise a tremendous £1600.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support, along with Cheryl her classroom teacher. In addition to this Chatelherault Primary raised over £3000.00 on the Thursday prior to their abseil by holding a "Macmillan Big Coffee Morning".

It was a really great weekend with over £4600.00 being raised for a very worthwhile cause. Thanks again to all the parents of Boys from the Company who either supported Linda's abseil or who attend the events at Chatelherault.

7.30 pm Service at Cadzow

As mentioned last week there will be a celebration service held this coming Sunday at 7.30 pm in the Church.

The service is for and with Anthony Short our Churches Missionary partner who works in a school in Israel.

I would ask that all the Junior and Company Section Boys attend this service, please meet in the halls for 7.15 in full uniform with a collection.

The service should only last an hour, parents are welcome to stay and join the service. I don't know if there is or will be any tea or coffee served afterwards, we can only wait and see.

I do hope you can join us on Sunday, I know a lot of you have maybe been away on holiday this week and will only just be back. see what you can do.

Junior & Company Sections - Friday 16th October and Sunday 18th October

Junior and Company Sections will not meet on Friday 16th October, because this is the Friday at the end of the Schools October week holiday.

This however does not mean that we will not be going to Church on the 3rd Sunday.
On Sunday the 18th October there will be a special 7.30 pm service of celebration held in the Church for our Missionary partner and his family. I would like as many of the Junior and Company Section Boys to attend this service in Uniform.
Meet in the Church Halls at 7.15 pm the service starts at 7.30 and should not last an hour. Parents are more than welcome to stay and join the service if they want.

Junior and Company Sections will be on as usual the following Friday 23rd October.

Anchor Boys Officer jumps off Lighthouse! On a rope with her teacher.

Don't know what you are doing this week end? But Linda is going to do an abseil at Barns Ness Lighthouse near Dunbar, on the afternoon of Saturday 26th September.

There are 169 stairs to climb to the top before she throws herself over the edge to abseil down 121 feet to the ground.
She is doing the abseil with Cheryl McFarlane the teacher she works with at Chatelherault Primary School, and about another 100 mad people all raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

September Weekend

Just a quick note to say that there will be no Junior or Company Section on next Friday (25th) as this is the September weekend. However, both sections will meet again, as normal, on Friday 2nd October.

Monday, September 14, 2009

We're back and getting settled in

The Anchor Section have been back now for the last two Tuesdays and are on again tomorrow night. There are 20 Boys this year at Anchors and they are a wild/noisy bunch.

Again the Junior and Company Sections have both met for the last two weeks. There are 28 Junior Section and 12 Company Section Boys.

Everybody that needs new items of uniform have almost all given in a note of their requirements, hopefully we will place the order tomorrow night after Anchor Section for a prompt delivery.

Junior Section will be put into their Teams on Friday 18th for the first time this session, as will Company Section their Squads.

We will be starting a new email / letter delivery system over the next couple of weeks backed up with postings on this blog page. It's part of our effort to save some paper and ink cartridge cost. I don't suppose our little effort will help save the world from global warming etc. but every little bit helps.
So if you do get an email, remember to do what it says at the bottom.
Please consider the environment before printing the e-mail.

Look out for a Company Section posting coming soon:

How to sharpen pencils! The Video.

Don't know who that could be aimed at John?

1 week to the start of the Anchor Section

It's back by popular demand!

Next Tuesday 1st September 6 pm in the Church halls at Cadzow Parish Church.

All the Boys in P1 at Chatelherault should have had a note by now. So expect a few new 1st year Boys.

Returning 2nd & 3rd Year Boys have all had a letter sent out.

I'm pretty sure that Linda, Karen & Stewart are looking forward to seeing you all again next week.

I will try to get to the cash & carry for tuck shop sweets before next week!

Re-Start Letters, Consent Forms and Uniform Orders

You should have all received your re-start letters today with a couple of exceptions that have been posted.

The letter tells you about the new session start dates:

Anchor Section – Re-start Tuesday 1st September.
Tuesday Nights 6.00 p.m. until 7.15 p.m. in main Church Hall. Boys in P1 to P3.
Uniform - BB blue Polo shirt, BB red sweatshirt, Dark trousers and dark footwear, Armband.
Jogging trousers and trainers OK for normal Tuesday nights.

Junior Section - Re-start Friday 4th September.
Friday Nights 6.00 p.m. until 7.45 p.m. in main Church Hall. Boys in P4 to P6

Uniform - BB blue Polo shirt, BB royal blue sweatshirt, Dark trousers and dark footwear to be worn, BB Hat, complete with yellow surround and hat badge, appropriate armbands and badges.

Company Section - Re-start Friday 4th September.
Friday Nights 7.45 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. in main Church Hall. Boys in P7 to S6

Uniform - Long sleeved blue BB shirt for the boys, with BB Boys clip on tie, plain dark trousers and dark footwear, BB Hat, complete with red surround and hat badge, appropriate armbands and badges.

There is a Uniform order slip in with the letter. We know that not everybody needs new uniform, but here is a chance if something is too wee for you or you are moving up a section.

When we get these orders back with payment we will put together a "big" order to BB Supplies. This way it cuts down on the post and packaging cost and it also avoids the disappointment of not getting what you need at the local BB Supplies Depot in Motherwell.

There is also a copy of the Annual Consent Form in with this letter please read it carefully and complete the form for the correct Boy in the correct Section. We have enclosed a copy relevant to the Section that the Boy is going into. However, if there are two brothers in the house please check the top Part A of the form to make sure you are completing for the correct section.

Lastly there is a note about this blogspot, and the fact that we want to use it more to pass on information and also to cut down on the amount of paper we use.

We would like to get a note of an email address of a parent/guardian to whom we can send the necessary notifications and information. Please fill this in and bring it back to us at the start of the session

Bon Voyage to The Coutts

We wish Fraser and his Family all the very best when they leave soon to move across to Dubai for a couple of years.

Remember you are leaving behind loads of friends over here and we would like you to keep in touch.

Let us know what the weathers like, how hot it really is, and perhaps you are bored with all the sun.
Think of us all shivering over here in lovely not so sunny Hamilton.

I'm sure we will hear from your Family over here how you are doing.
Remember to keep watching the blog spot.

Best wishes to Fraser, Zara, Mum & Dad.

From all the Officers and Boys at the 5th Hamilton BB.

The Summer break is almost over.

The School starts on Monday, Anchor Boys re-start two weeks on Tuesday, Junior & Company Sections three weeks on Friday.

That’s during the first week in September. Tuesday 1st & Friday 4th, but don’t worry we will be sending out letters to you all next week sometime.

I have not been updating the blog page much since early June, nothing has really happened. There has not been a lot to show our tell you.

I have attached a couple of photos taken at the 125th Anniversary Activity Weekend back in early June. It was a good weekend, brilliant venue with loads of sports to take part in or to watch.

The 5 Boys took part in all sessions over the weekend, the two staff had a slightly slower weekend but to be fair we still took part in more than half the activities.

The Boys were well impressed at Dougie’ s volleyball skills as demonstrated before lunch on the Saturday. But they were even more impressed by the fact that my team beat Dougie’ s team at volleyball.

Come on Mr H. you are letting the 1981 team down there by letting me beat you!

We thought we were getting away from Hamilton for the weekend, however Mr Batty found us on Sunday morning playing football in a cage.

The food was good healthy balanced diet loads of just what is needed when playing sports and for athletes. But although the Boys took part in everything I think they would have preferred a little stodgier and less diet.

The picture above sort of sums it all up. Sunday after lunch before the final activity – shattered!
Congratulations to Calum - Still standing up!
See you all soon

Company Section - 125th Anniversary Activity Weekend

There are 5 Company Section Boys and 2 Officers going to Largs for an Activity weekend on the 5th, 6th & 7th of June.
We have being paying this trip up since February and everything is set to go as far as I am concerned. Full payment has been made to Scottish Headquarters in Larbert as requested by the due dates. But as with most things "Brigade National", we still await our information packs from Headquarters.

Hopefully we will have this material in hand during next week.

It would therefore be my intention to have a quick half hour meeting with the Boys and a Parent down at the halls on Friday 29th May at 7.30
We have booked the fully inclusive weekend package with en-suite facilities. We shall wait and see just what that entails. I do know from the previous information that it starts on the Friday evening with a BBQ, and that it finishes on the Sunday.
At the moment, I would ask that you bear with us until such a time that I can provide all of the relevant information. i.e. departure times and estimated time of arrival home on Sunday.
As explained above I shall make every effort during next week to have all of this information to hand for our meeting next Friday.

They thinks it's all over, It is now!

Just when you thought we had got to the end of another session, there are a couple of hours added on.

It was not injury time or anything so sinister, it was the Anchor and Junior Section trip held last Saturday.
They met down at the Vue Cinema at the appointed hour, they were not impressed when I told them they were going to see The Hannah Montana Movie. It wasn't it was about a wee dug from Beverley Hills that got lost and found in Mexico.

They had loads to eat and then they went for more food before playing football and Supersoccer skills.

The Junior Section were first on the outdoor pitch.

The Anchor Section had that "Ronaldo" character playing with them, which confused me because he had a white Man Utd top on but he had turned up in an Accies tracksuit??

We even enlisted a Company Section Boy as referee, because I'm not up for all that running about. As you can see he wasn't sponsored by Specsavers, but should have gone there because he could not see the ball with out holding it in front of his face!

Rain did not stop play, not that I think it would have really mattered, they might have enjoyed a bit of rain to keep them cool. The Anchor Section insisted on a half time break to allow them to have a drink of water.

That is the final whistle now, it is over.

The new session starts in September.

Have a good holiday, enjoy the break.

Mark and all the Officers at the 5th

Keep checking the blog site to see what news I have been putting on.

125th Anniversary Tattoo

What a great night you all missed on Saturday night at Braehead Arena.

There were 4 bands – The Massed Pipes and Drums, The Drums and Bugles, The Wind Band and The Fifes and Drums. The music was superb, particularly when they played as the Massed Bands at the Finale; there were almost 600 musicians on the floor.

The Drill Precision Drill was also brilliant, they had 4 Drill Squads from Lanarkshire District Fellowship doing the District Drill Routine on the floor at the same time. Of course we were only watching the Hamilton & District Battalion Squad, because 3 of our Boys were in that Squad.

The all did very well, and they also seemed to enjoy the experience. Andrew, Calum and Robbie should be congratulated on how well they did. They also seemed to have had a good yet tiring day.

The Finale was great to see all the performers back out on the floor again. Our Company Colour was also included in the Finale along with those of the other Companies taking part in the Tattoo.
I think Andrew now realises that it is not much fun carrying a Colour for any length of time. I must admit that it brought back memories to me of the Centenary Celebrations at Ibrox in 1983; when as a Colour Sergeant I was the Escort to the Battalion Queen’s Colour on the pitch on the Saturday afternoon.

BUG HOTELS?

As part of the Junior Section Award Programme, under Community, and Ecology and all other things green. The Boys made "Bug Hotels" a couple of weeks ago, but as with most Friday nights it was raining.

So last night we took advantage of the dry weather and set up the "bug hotels" in and around the Church grounds. We asked our resident Eco expert to come down and advise us what would be the best location to put them in, and with a little expert advice, off they went.

The bug hotels are made out of cut up pieces of bamboo garden cane and some drinking straws tied in a bundle with a piece of string. The idea is that it provides a dry dark habitat for all things creepy and crawly. The sort of bug type things that help eat other plant eating bugs and help towards the Eco system with in the garden space.

Anchor and Junior Sections Trip 16th May 2009

We have only three weeks till the end of session, that is just a reminder, that our Display and Presentation of Awards, is on Friday 8th May at 7pm. (that is of course ALL sections of the Company). Can I also ask once again, that if your son is not going to be at Boys' Brigade that evening could you please let us know now.

As with previous years the Anchor and Junior Section trip is on the Saturday, one week after the display, this year being, as per our calendar, Sat 16th May.

Due to other Boys' Brigade commitments for 3 of our staff on the same evening, we are unable to organise a trip, which takes us away for the day, however we hope both Parents and Boys will be happy with the organised alternative.

We have managed an arrangement with the Vue Cinema, Hamilton, to allow us a block booking on the Sat morning, at the Kids Show, followed in the afternoon by a Fun Activities Programme at the Palace Grounds Sports Facility, which will be conducted by two Sports Development Coaches, from SLC.

The boys should wear their Anchor or Junior polo shirts and we suggest they wear sports shorts under tracksuit trousers and trainers. A jacket might be required depending on weather, as we will walk from the Vue to the Palace Grounds. (we will have toilet facilities at the palace grounds, but no changing rooms)

Drop off time: between 9.30 –9.45am (no later, as we have to be seated before doors open to the general public)
Venue: outside Vue Cinema

Pick-up time: 3pm
Venue: Palace Grounds Sports Facility, outside covered pitch.

Boys may bring a drink and small snack for the cinema – NO money to be brought.

We will provide a drink and crisps, after the cinema and before the Fun Activities.

As with previous trips, a percentage of the cost is off set by the profit share from our smartie tube fundraiser. Total cost for each boy is £5; the profit share is £3, for boys who returned their tube of 20p’s.

Cost for this event will therefore be:
· £2 - if you have returned a smartie tube
· £5 – if no smartie tube.

As time is marching on, we would be obliged if you would complete the attached permission slip and return it next week with the appropriate amount of money.

We hope this meets with your approval and we’re sure the boys will have a fun day, doing something slightly different.

Battalion Junior Section Quarterdeck Parade

The Battalion Annual Junior Section Parade is being held on the afternoon of Sunday 26th April at the West Parish Church, Hamilton.

Junior Section Boys are asked to attend this event in full BB uniform. The service will start at 3 pm in the Church and should not last longer than an hour. During the service the various Battalion Junior Section prizes are awarded to the winning Companies from the Battalion.

We are sure that a couple of our Boys should get an award at this service.

We would ask that the Boys meet us in the Church halls of the West Parish Church at 2.30 pm, in uniform with a collection. The service should be finished for 4 pm and the Boys can be picked up from the halls again. Of course parents are more than welcome to stay and join the worship.

The West Parish Church is on Clydesdale Street next to Hamilton West Railway Station.

Easter Holidays

Hope you are all enjoying your Easter Holidays from School, I'm sure you really are missing it and also BB, Anchor Boys, Junior and/or Company Section. Hope your are not over doing the chocolate!

Just remember we are not on this week on Friday 17th.

Anchor Section will meet as usual on Tuesday 21st April.

Junior and Company Sections will meet again on Friday 24th April.

All the Sections will be working on their Display items for 8th of May. We have invited the new Minister - Mr Carswell to be our Inspecting Officer in his new role as Company Chaplain.

125th Tattoo
Just a reminder that the only Boys that are required this week are the 3 Company Section Boys who are in the Battalion Drill Squad. Mr McLean from 1st Bothwell will pick the Boys up on Friday this week as previously arranged for a rehearsal at Bothwell.

The Boys have only another week to master the routine before their big night at the Braehead Arena on 25th April.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Company Section Boys in Battalion Drill Squad

3 of the Company Section Boys are currently in training with other Boys from Hamilton & District Battalion Companies which form a Battalion Drill Squad.

They will be taking part in the 125th Anniversary Tattoo on the 25th of April.
You can still get tickets if you want via Ticketmaster or direct from Braehead.

On the down side of this the 3 Boys are reminded that they need to stick in and keep practicing. So Mr McLean from 1st Bothwell will be picking them up from our Church and will be returning them to the Church on Friday 3rd April and Friday 24th April, He also wants to do a rehearsal during the holiday period on Friday 17th April and will make the necessary arrangements with the Boys for that night.

We wish the 3 Boys well and hope that the Battalion Drill Squad does us proud on the night of the Tattoo.

Anchor Section - Easter Stuff

Hi Folks,
Well we had a very ‘high’ bunch of Boys tonight, all obviously excited about their Easter holidays.

We managed to make Easter Baskets and Cards, which hopefully made it home for you to see. (no photographic evidence!)

One small problem – “whose sweat shirt is this?” was the question of the evening. Yet again we had the age-old problem of sweat shirts with no name tags. Having wasted over 10mins sorting this out, we would ask that you please make sure your sons sweat shirt has his name on it for after the Easter holidays.

On a lighter note, thanks very much to the 13 Boys and some Mums who joined us at the Puppet Show, last Friday. It was great fun and we had lots of comments about it tonight from the Boys.

Anchor Section - Easter Holidays

Return from holidays on Tuesday 21st April. – Anchor Boys as normal.

Trophies - the return of last years

Just a quick note to remind the Boys in whichever Section, that if you still have a Company trophy or cup that was presented at last years Display. Could they bring them down to either Anchor Boys on Tuesday or Junior and/or Company Section on Friday this week.

This does not mean the "wee" individual presentation plaques that the Boys get with the main trophy, they keep them, what I am looking for is the Silverware.

As I explained the Display is on 8th of May, so we need to get these in, decide who has won them this year, get them out for engraving and have them back for the 8th of May to give them back out again.

Friday, March 27, 2009

Tonight we had a visit from a Community Safety Officer. He came in just as the Junior Section parents were leaving, he was in uniform there were a few funny looks.

But it was OK we had asked him along to talk to the Company Section Boys about personal safety issues.

Also we had a young man along to show us how to juggle.

Some of them did manage to do juggling with 3 balls, others failled miserably, but tried.
